    The Opportunity:

    The primary focus of this role is to provide leadership, support and development to Ontario & Atlantic Regional Professional Liability underwriting. You will lead the underwriting, business development and profitable growth of an assigned portfolio within the region. Key products include Architects and Engineers E&O, Contractors Professional Liability, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability. You will be responsible for ensuring the underwriting team contributes to the success of Liberty Mutual Canada’s Vision: to lead with purpose and to support the growth, innovation, and impact of Canadian business.     Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Champion and model our Liberty values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
    • Manage and support the growth and development of a team of underwriters located in the region. Champion the development of technical and business development skills and support a high degree of employee engagement through a culture of success, empowerment and accountability. Handle team underwriting referrals. Evaluate and manage resources to support profitable growth, and ensure the team meets or exceeds new business, renewal, retention, rate and profit targets. Identify strategic areas for growth within the Professional Liability segment and support associated business planning and forecasting.
    • Act as a key resource for Professional Liability underwriters and as a key point of contact for authority sign off and technical training and development.
    • Lead thought leadership initiatives that showcase Liberty’s expertise, solidify brand reputation and position Liberty as a valued partner in the eyes of customers.
    • Prospect and underwrite new and renewal business within Liberty Mutual’s standards and guidelines. Review and negotiate policy terms and conditions consistent with Liberty Mutual’s corporate strategy. Review, evaluate and initiate recommendations regarding appropriate modifications to underwriting guidelines or strategy in conjunction with monitoring profitability of an assigned portfolio of business.
    • Provide input to the development of marketing plans, working with the Regional Leader and other key stakeholders to expand and improve information sharing across the entity and support the continuous development and expansion of key broker relationships within the marketplace.
    • Work with Operations & Technology, Industry & National Solutions, Product & Risk Services, and Alternative Risk Solutions to identify and prioritize initiatives to drive best-in-class service, productivity and multi-line business opportunities.
    • Champion our key value proposition and ensure that we consistently offer top-level customer service to brokers and clients. Ensure these key standards are maintained across the organization and provide support to the Underwriting team in the region to expand our presence in the market.
    • Responsible for the monthly financial reporting of the team’s underwriting results. Assist with additional financial reporting and planning, as necessary.
    • Utilize facultative reinsurance to protect the profitability of the Underwriting portfolio. Ensure that booking and coding is actively managed and cross-checked, as appropriate.
    • Stay informed on any key legislative or regulatory changes affecting regional products or industry segments.
    • Perform related duties as requested, including report preparation, presentations, special projects, and directing or conducting audits to ensure the success of the region.

    Skills & Qualifications:

    • 8-10+ years underwriting experience (or equivalent) with proven leadership skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree/college diploma or equivalent technical expertise
    • Proven track record of building strong broker and client relationships; providing market leading service, fostering an engaging work environment, and championing operational and technology initiatives aimed at enhancing underwriting productivity.
    • Experience underwriting some or all of the key product(s) listed in the ‘Position Summary’.
    • Excellent communicator, active listener, critical thinker and problem solver.
    • Ability to build relationships and exercise influence while working cross-functionally.
    • Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
    • Self-starter with superior time management and delegation skills.
