The Opportunity:
We’re looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal & Governance team for 12 months.
Your role will be required to regularly perform essential duties on behalf of the company from your assigned Aviso office. Your role is considered medium flexibility, requiring you to work onsite 1-3 days per week at our office at 1111 West Georgia St, Vancouver, BC.
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Counsel will focus on providing support to members of the Legal team and other departments and Aviso Wealth’s subsidiary, Northwest & Ethical Investments L.P., covering all legal matters regarding securities law, investment funds, prospectus disclosure, contract review and general corporate law matters.

What your day looks like:
- Provide general legal advice and support to business lines on day-to-day operational matters and policies involving securities law and investment funds, such as simplified prospectus filings, new investment fund offerings, investment fund changes, responsible investing and exemptive relief applications, in relation to NI 81-101 Mutual Fund Prospectus Disclosure, NI 81-102 Investment Funds, NI 81-106 Investment Fund Continuous Disclosure and CSA Staff Notice 81-334 ESG-Related Investment Fund Disclosure
- Draft, review, negotiate and manage contracts, such as sub-advisory agreements, NDAs etc.
- Provide general legal advice and support to business lines on general corporate commercial law matters
- Perform work, including legal research, drafting memoranda and assisting with preparation of policies and procedures, as directed by Senior Legal Counsel or Chief Legal Officer on various departmental or company matters
- Resolve inquiries from other departments, such as materiality assessments regarding product changes, reviewing fund facts and reviewing management reports of fund performance
- Engage in various company projects with a view towards new product offerings or other initiatives
- Liaise with external stakeholders, such as external legal counsel and auditors
Requirements:
Your experience and skills:
- LL.B / J.D and qualified to practice law as a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario/ British Columbia or another Canadian jurisdiction with at least three years of experience with a law firm and/or in-house
- A quick learner, able to efficiently grasp concepts and issues and contextualize them
- Responsible – a dedicated professional who takes pride in their work
- Pragmatic – adept at achieving practical solutions and effective results
- Meticulous – thoughtful and thorough with careful attention to detail
- Excellent analytical skills and judgment, with the ability to deliver well-reasoned and practical advice
- Securities regulatory practice experience is advantageous
- Familiarity with the wealth management / financial services industry and products is desirable, such as relevant work experience or past legal practice providing services to wealth management / financial services firms, or through education such as the Canadian Securities Course
- Fluent communication skills in English are required and bilingual skills in French are an asset
