About the role
We’re looking for an Intermediate Underwriter to join our growing team!
As an Intermediate Underwriter, Commercial Insurance, you will work with our National Brokers focusing on a range of commercial and industrial risks, including such diverse segments as, manufacturing, commercial real estate, contracting, wholesaling, warehousing, health services and other financial, business professional services. People will count on you to think outside the box and provide creative solutions. You will build a profitable portfolio of accounts above our $10,000 minimum premium with an emphasis on quoting new business by utilizing your experience.
This is permanent full time hybrid position requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in our Vancouver or Victoria office.
What you’ll do here:
Solicit and analyze requests for quotes, renewals and policy changes, and recommend innovative solutions
Support our National Brokers regarding underwriting and rating policies
Develop long-term and meaningful relationships with our National Broker partners by providing legendary service
Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions and marketing events in support of broker relationship development
Use negotiating skills to maintain healthy relationships within and outside the company
Provide technical advice, recommendations, and mentoring to team members
Provide creative solutions on how to improve the department and increase efficiencies
Review and analyze policy coverages and claims experience
Ensure underwriting files are well documented and compliant with corporate guidelines
Underwrite a profitable book of new and renewal business in accordance with corporate guidelines
Have a thorough knowledge of current market wordings
Interpret loss control reports and develop internal capacity
What you bring to the table:
Minimum 3 years of property/casualty underwriting experience in large/complex risk classes
Solid knowledge and awareness of market conditions and trends
Strong verbal and written communication skills because you understand the importance of building relationships by tailoring your approach when dealing with different communication styles
Exemplary sales, negotiation, and customer service skills
A track record of mentoring and training Underwriters
Positive, solution-oriented and adaptable attitude
Self-driven and able to work effectively under pressure
Analytical and flexible to change
Strong decision-making skills
Post-secondary education in Insurance Risk Management or a relatable field
CIP/FCIP designation, or actively enrolled in courses and working toward the designation

Salary of the successful candidate will typically be positioned between the following range, taking into consideration a number of factors including prior experience, qualifications, anticipated contribution to role, location and internal equity: $54,600.00 – $81,800.00
