    Job description: Reporting to the Director, Ontario Property & Casualty, the Associate Manager/Manager, Property & Casualty is responsible for the management of the Toronto P&C underwriting staff and execution of operational business plan. The Associate Manager/Manager will oversee underwriting acumen including risk appetite, data quality and service levels. The Associate Manager/Manager is also responsible for the achievement of team goals for profitability and the production of desirable business. Lastly, they will handle daily people management, talent development of the team, and performance management including performance reviews.

    Demonstrated success at managing multiple and changing priorities and delivering results is critical. This role requires the successful candidate to be office-centric with a minimum of 3 days of in office work per week.

    Job Responsibilities

    Underwriting:

    • Develop a growing book of new business to help drive team annual budget, taking accountability for personal production expectations as well as team production goals
    • Maintain the long-term profitability of a significant portfolio of accounts; the ability to successfully negotiate terms, conditions and pricing to achieve new business, renewal and profitability targets; conduct price monitoring, risk selection and data quality performance reviews
    • Implement renewal rate and exposure, retention, and rate adequacy guidelines
    • Refer and support requests from direct team for pricing decision and risk selection for risks beyond personal authority, along with recommendations
    • Ensure endorsements, renewals, reissues, and cancellations are reviewed and analyzed by direct team
    • Understand and monitor trends and developments identifying areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies
    • Participate in audits as required and oversee the completion of file reviews and audits
    • Strengthen technical expertise of underwriting team to maximize profitability of business by balancing rate and retention
    • Drive best practice in pricing, portfolio management and operational efficiencies

    Business Development:

    • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with brokers and/or clients to enhance understanding of the target market and to contribute to quality service, problem solving, and risk selection
    • Collaborate with brokers and clients to assist in business retention and client satisfaction; develop relationships with brokers to ensure the delivery of efficient and focused targeted sales activities to brokers
    • Oversee the provision of quality client service including clarification of coverage, wordings, and claims history; participate in problem resolution between brokers and underwriting staff
    • Review broker evaluations, analyze results and maintain a complete understanding of brokers within the portfolio
    • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes including competitive analysis and information, and ensure all necessary broker management systems are updated and current
    • Work closely with the Director, Underwriting and Vice-President to identify new product needs and develop new strategic programs to meet market demands
    • Ensure that product changes or enhancements are communicated to brokers and/or clients in a timely manner

    People Management:

    • Provide strong leadership support to team that cultivates and aligns with our culture, drives production, and motivates associates to perform at their maximum potential
    • Provide effective daily leadership, coaching and motivation of staff to ensure service and quality objectives are met; mentor and train underwriters and support staff
    • Provide individual and team feedback for the purpose of coaching staff to meet or exceed planned results in the areas of price adequacy, risk selection, data quality, and service levels
    • Oversee the completion of peer file reviews and audits
    • Act as a resource on risks, within own established authority levels
    • Advance the technical development of front line staff through clear communication of technical expectations and ongoing training / knowledge sharing
    • Commitment to regular in-person visits with direct reports in offices outside of the Managers own
    • Manage annual performance review process
    • Work closely to Human Resources to handle Performance Management Interventions including Performance Improvement Plans

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Designations: CIP and/or FCIP
    • Licenses: Provincial License or eligibility for obtaining
    • Minimum 8-10 years MGA experience an asset
    • 2-3 years of leadership/management experience required
    • Diverse property & casualty insurance experience across multiple disciplines
    • Strong knowledge of domestic and international property & casualty markets
    • Strong broker relationships
    • The title of Associate Manager verses Manager is dependent on level of experience
